The purpose of the Conference is discussion of a wide range of issues on the most important results achieved and topical issues of contemporary theories and models of scientific content of thematic maps and atlases, theories, methods and technologies for their creation and use.
The conference sets practically significant goals: to attract the attention of the professional community to new issues of contemporary thematic cartography and atlasography through the presentation of projects and scientific developments of scientists who have achieved significant results both in creating fundamental thematic maps and atlases, and in developing new digital technologies for their presentation and use; stimulation of the scientific, methodological and innovative technological potentials of young scientists and specialists.

Historical background. Discussion of a wide range of issues on the main results and topical issues of developing theories, methods and technologies for thematic mapping to create fundamental cartographic works of various territorial coverage and scale levels. Their goal is to solve urgent problems of the development of Russia, its regions, adjacent and transboundary territories. This practice has become regular and has a well-tested platform where leading experts and young cartographers discuss the most fundamental scientific problems, the latest trends, approaches, methods and results of their research in a lively creative dialogue.
All-Russian conferences on thematic cartography began to be convened by the Geographical Institute in Irkutsk in the 1960s. To date, twelve such conferences of a high academic level have been held, ten of which were held in Irkutsk, and the first (1964) and the second (1966) were held in Leningrad. The third conference was held in Irkutsk in 1968 in the Institute of Geography of Siberia and the Far East of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (the first name of the Sochava Institute of Geography, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences). It went down in history as the first Irkutsk conference on thematic cartography. In 1977, the Institute held the 2nd Conference "Cartographic Support for the Planning of Territorial-Industrial Complexes". In 1983, the 3rd Conference «Cartographic Support of Regional National Economic Programs» was held. The 4th Conference on thematic cartography «Cartographic Methods for Studying Environmental Problems and Optimizing Nature Management» was held in 1988. The 5th Conference «Resource and Environmental Mapping Based on Information Technology» was held in Irkutsk in 1993. Since 1996, conferences on thematic cartography in Irkutsk have entered the international level. The 6th Irkutsk Conference was held within the framework of the 2nd International Conference «InterCarto: GIS for the Study and Mapping of the Environment». The 7th scientific conference on thematic cartography «Cartographic and Geoinformation Support for the Management of Regional Development» was held in Irkutsk in 2002. In 2006, the 8th All-Russian Conference on thematic cartography with international participation «Geoinformation Mapping for Balanced Territorial Development» was held. The 9th Conference on thematic cartography was devoted to the discussion of issues on the main theoretical directions, methodological approaches and technological possibilities of thematic mapping for the creation of modern spatial data infrastructures of various hierarchical levels and was held in Irkutsk in 2010. In October 2015, the 10th anniversary Irkutsk Conference on thematic cartography «Atlas Mapping: Traditions and Innovations».
